The Environmental Services Division in the Department of Public Works is accepting applications for an intern to assist with updating the City’s watershed plans, an important project that will support and contribute to the success of the Division. The position will assist with meeting planning, scheduling meeting sites, arranging for speakers for meetings, taking meeting minutes, adding information to planning documents, organizing final documents, tracking and communicating with stakeholders, and maintaining stakeholder lists.
This is a short-term position, averaging 10 to 35 hours per week based on operational needs for approximately 12 months (estimated dates October 2024 – October 2025). A flexible schedule during established business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday) can be accommodated. $20.24 per hour; direct deposit of paychecks is a condition of employment for all City of Gaithersburg employees.
This internship is ideal for a college student (currently enrolled or recently graduated) or other individual interested in public service on the local level and/or a career in local government. Assisting with this project will provide the intern with substantial and transferable skills and experience in planning and coordination, community outreach, data collection, research and analysis, report preparation, and other assignments. You will work alongside professional engineers and project managers, gaining exposure to project coordination, relevant software, data collection, and so much more.
The successful candidate must be responsible, dependable, and enjoy interacting with people. You will gain new perspectives and experiences, exposure to innovative best practices and the challenges and opportunities that can be gained in local government, as well as meaningful experience working in a professional office environment and directly interacting with the Gaithersburg community. Job Functions
What you will do with us:
Assist in the development and maintenance of project documentation including data collection.
Assist with meeting planning and scheduling meeting sites and guest speakers.
Perform data entry; conduct research and analysis; develop and prepare appropriate documents, reports, and statistics.
Communicate with and track/maintain stakeholder information.
Prepare outreach communications, meeting minutes, etc.
Collaborate with the Environmental Services Team to gain an understanding of individual roles that are required for a successful project.

Qualifications
What you will need to be considered:
A positive customer-friendly attitude.
A strong interest in public service and/or a career in local government; an undergraduate or graduate student in pursuit of a degree related to environmental science/education/engineering or closely related field desirable.
Some previous work experience desirable.
Valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
Solid computer/data processing skills (Word, Excel, Outlook) and the ability to operate a variety of standard office equipment.
Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) a plus.
Strong and effective administrative, organizational, interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), and customer service skills.
Careful attention to detail and accuracy.
Demonstrated ability to understand, follow, and carry out oral and written instructions and manage multiple tasks and responsibilities.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively independently with minimal supervision and as part of the team.
Or any acceptable equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties and functions.
