The UCSD Media Teaching Lab is dedicated to providing outstanding media production facilities, equipment, and technical assistance to UC San Diego undergraduate and graduate students, offering a wide variety of equipment available for use in photography, video, film, and audio production.

The Media Lab Operations Assistant supports senior staff members in their instructional and administrative duties and covers shifts as needed at the Media Teaching Lab checkout desk. Other responsibilities include providing backup in the administration of the equipment checkout facility, production studios, editing suites and classrooms. Oversees student workers at the checkout facility, including providing work direction and guidance on department policy and operational standards. Assist department staff with projects and administrative tasks as needed. Assist faculty with special requests and classroom equipment setup and troubleshooting.

Responsibilities:

Perform equipment checkouts and returns using WebCheckout software and appropriate management of equipment inventory.

Assist students with registration and troubleshooting reservation system.

Assist student workers with checkout overrides and equipment usage questions.

Assist in organizing equipment and general upkeep of checkout facility and online inventory systems.

Suggest and implement improvements to checkout workflow and other operations at direction of others.

Provide guidance to student employees in the training, work direction and implementation of facility policies.

Assist in the upkeep and general maintenance of the Media Teaching Lab Facility (Offices, classrooms, studios, editing suites and checkout).

Assists with scheduling of equipment and studio demos, class reservations and workshops.

Report facility repairs, issues and/or potential improvements to Supervisor and/or senior staff.

Act as back-up to the Media Teaching Lab staff for faculty or department requests and assist with classes where needed.

Assist students in minor issues arising in editing suites and using post-production software.

Works with a wide variety of media technologies, networks and computer hardware and software.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated experience in customer service or help desk environment, including experience handling in-person service requests.

  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in written form with staff, supervisors, students, and customers.

  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact in a positive manner with diverse clientele with emphasis on flexibility and professionalism.

  • Strong verbal communication skills, especially in clearly explaining and articulating information professionally and accurately.

  • Experience using software and online tools for communication (Outlook, Teams) and general office needs (Excel/Google Sheets).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of production equipment (cameras, lights, microphones, etc.) to identify solutions for student needs.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Working onsite is required, no remote work.

  • Ability to drive an electric cart.

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background check and DMV check results.

  • Will be a participant in the DMV Pull Notice Program. A high standard of dependability is required for the position.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $33,900 - $72,996 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $16.24 - $34.96

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
