Job Description

Responsibilities

Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Teach lower school classes for Grades K-2;
  • Preparation of materials, including lesson plans and assessments;
  • Plan, evaluate, and revise library curricula, lesson content, lesson materials, and methods of instruction;
  • Empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, informed consumers, and ethical users of information;
  • Instruct students how to use the library and its materials effectively and provide individual assistance to students and faculty as needed; 
  • Supervise and educate students so their behavior supports the library’s academic and social-emotional purpose;
  • Assist in opening and closing the library daily;
  • Assist students, faculty, and staff in the circulation of library materials, use of the online catalogs, and use of online database resources;
  • Assist with evaluating, selecting, cataloging, classifying, and weeding all print and non-print material; 
  • Manage and create library displays;
  • Assist teachers in Grades K-2 with collecting library materials for special projects;
  • Assist with inventory of all library holdings;
  • Perform a variety of library clerical and computer-related tasks as assigned;
  • Regular participation in professional development opportunities to maintain and grow expertise in the subject matter;
  • Collaboration with members of the K-12 Library Department, Lower School faculty, staff, and the entire K-12 community;
  • Attend Lower School meetings, workshops, and in-service programs;
  • Serve as a “Panther Pod” (advisory) leader;
  • Enthusiastic participation in the greater life of the school;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in elementary education; three or more years of library experience; master’s degree in library science is preferred;
  • Demonstrated experience creating inclusive learning environments and opportunities;
  • Solid understanding of childhood development, strong communication skills, and a passion for teaching this age level;
  • Ability to manage competing demands and adapt to frequent or unexpected changes;
  • Ability to work collaboratively and methodically with students, parents, faculty, and staff on a regular basis;
  • Ability to use effective class management techniques;
  • Engage robustly in fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion to promote a healthy learning environment;
  • Strong computer skills, including previous use of an integrated library system, use of various databases and other electronic resources, and internet searching expertise is preferred;
  • Love of reading, information, and working with students and teachers; 
  • Superb organizational skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work effectively as a team member.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Work in an environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges and deadlines, as well as a diverse array of contacts;
  • Work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time;
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 30 pounds;
  • Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled classroom environment;
  • Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
