Associate Research Scientist
Columbia University?s Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care, invites applications for a research position available at the rank of Associate Research Scientist.
The successful candidate be joining a growing multidisciplinary research collaboration on tuberculosis (TB) epidemiology. The objectives of our research group are to utilize the interface between clinical science, pathogen genomics, immunology, and microbiology to advance understanding, translate knowledge, and ultimately achieve population-level impact on TB epidemics globally. Specific ongoing projects include longitudinal treatment cohorts of drug-resistant TB/HIV, novel DR-TB diagnostics, MTB genomic evolution, TB transmission studies, emergent drug resistance, developing advanced diagnostics for TB bacteremia and TB meningitis. Active collaborators include active collaborations in South Africa, Uganda, Ethiopia and New York City. Active funding is primarily through the NIH, and other private foundations.
The candidates will be expected to perform epidemiologic and translational research, including developing protocols, designing, conducting, and interpreting studies, analyzing data; preparing talks, grants, and manuscripts for publication; critically searching and reading published literature; presenting research results at local and national meetings; attending laboratory meetings; and train and supervise undergraduate and graduate students. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in utilizing multidisciplinary methods and molecular approaches to the epidemiology of infectious diseases.
As an Associate Research Scientist, this appointment will be covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the University and Columbia Postdoctoral Workers-UAW Local 4100.
Minimum Qualifications: MD, PhD, or both. Applications are invited from recent PhD or MD graduates for a full-time position, starting in Fall or Winter 2023. Candidate must have background in molecular and cell biology. Multi-disciplinary candidates are particularly sought and a background in epidemiology, microbiology, genomics, or clinical medicine may be appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications: Desired skill sets include but are not limited to: Bioinformatics, Phylogenetics/population genetics/evolution biology (e.g. BEAST), Genomic epidemiology, Clinical epidemiology, Biostatistics, Mathematical modeling, Spatial epidemiology, and/or Molecular biology/microbiology. Demonstrated skill in scientific writing, best demonstrated by publishing first author articles in high impact journals, is required. Relevant experience in research unit and the ability to supervise graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
Hiring Salary Range: $77,000
